Frequently Asked Questions

How much horsepower can a built 4L80E transmission handle?
A stock 4L80E and a properly built performance 4L80E are two very different transmissions. Power capacity depends on internal components, vehicle weight, engine torque, tuning, converter selection and how the vehicle is used. Twisted Torque offers multiple 4L80E build levels, from Street through Executioner, so the transmission can be matched to street driving, towing or high-horsepower performance applications.
Can I replace a 4L60E with a 4L80E?
Yes, the 4L60E-to-4L80E swap is one of the most common GM transmission upgrades, especially in higher-horsepower trucks and LS-powered builds. However, it is not normally a simple transmission-only replacement. Depending on the vehicle, the swap may require wiring or PCM changes, driveshaft modifications, a 32-spline yoke (2wd) or Customer 4x4 shaft needed for 4x4's, crossmember or mount changes, cooler-line changes, the correct flexplate/converter combination and tuning. Forum swap checklists repeatedly identify these same components.
Will a 4L80E work behind an LS, 5.3L, 6.0L or small-block Chevy engine?
The 4L80E is commonly used behind GM truck engines and in LS-powered performance swaps. Correct fitment depends on the engine, model year, flexplate, crank spacing, torque converter and electronic controls being used. Even older Chevy combinations are common swap candidates; enthusiasts have discussed 4L80E installations behind traditional small-block-pattern applications as well as later LS combinations.
Is a 4L80E a good transmission for towing and heavy trucks?
Yes. The 4L80E was designed as a heavy-duty four-speed automatic and was factory-installed in numerous Chevrolet and GMC 2500/3500, van and commercial applications. Its gearing is closely related to the TH400, adding a 0.75:1 overdrive fourth gear. That heavy-duty background is one reason the 4L80E remains popular for towing, performance trucks and high-power builds.
